The university’s principles and goals for collective bargaining support our mission. In all our collective bargaining relationships, we focus on achieving our mission by emphasizing the importance of quality, individual and institutional accountability, efficiency, flexibility, and ensuring a safe and respectful work environment. We also recognize that all our collective bargaining activities must occur within the constraints of our fiscal resources.

Quality

Enhance the university’s ability to recruit and retain the highest quality employees by providing competitive compensation packages that provide for periodic increases and that reflect appropriate labor markets for different occupations.

Accountability

Ensure that appropriate standards and measures are used to continuously improve individual and team performance and meet the needs of a rapidly changing university community. Account for all costs associated with the contract to ensure alignment with the rest of the university workforce.

Efficiency

Look for opportunities to make best and strategic use of university resources including the talent represented in the bargaining unit. This includes looking for opportunities to standardize bargaining contract language and benefits with those of the rest of the workforce and existing systems in order to provide for administrative efficiency and equity.

Flexibility

Strengthen the ability of the university to respond to changing needs, conditions, and opportunities.

Work Environment

Reinforce the university’s commitment to safety and wellness for its workforce as well as foster work environments that support professional development and mutual respect.
